National

In the last 30 years, over 3600 samples, mainly from three dolphin species, were given to the Port Elizabeth Museum Marine Mammal Collection - the 4th biggest marine mammal collection in the world. Samples provided by the KZNSB consist mainly of teeth, followed by skulls, reproductive organs, stomach/stomach contents and include skin, blubber, whole skeletons and various organs.

The KZNSB is a member of the South African National Tagging Program which is administered by the ORI and thus works closely with ORI regarding the exchange of tagging information. The KZNSB also works closely with the Endangered Wildlife Trust who kindly sponsored the "pinger experiments" for the prevention of dolphin catches. In the past, samples, data or expertise has been provided to researchers affiliated to the following institutes:

  • Shark Research Centre, Iziko Museum, Cape Town
  • Port Elizabeth Museum
  • Oceanographic Research Institute, Durban

  • Medical School, University of KZN

International

The KZNSB also works closely with other various local and international institutions either providing samples, data or expertise for a variety of different studies. In the past, material was provided for specific research projects to researchers affiliated, amongst others, with the following institutions:

  • University of Guelph, Canada
  • Macquarie University, Australia
  • University of South Carolina, USA
  • Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Germany
  • University of Aberdeen, UK

In the past, the KZNSB has made available various samples/materials for inclusion in private and institutional collections and for educational purposes and recipients include:

  • Inatura Museum, Dornbirn, Austria
  • Exploris, The Northern Ireland Aquarium, Portaferry, Ireland
  • The Royal Museum for Central Africa, Tervuren, Belgium
  • Schweizer Museum, Freiburg, Switzerland (skull, with gills of a white shark)
